THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD (2018)

ABOUT THE WORK

for SATB choir

Premiered in Griswold Hall, Peabody Conservatory

Conducted by Steven Crino

Duration: 5'

‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ is dedicated to the memory of Sue Dowiak, who passed away this year, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was the mother of one my childhood friends growing up, and is without question one of the kindest people I have ever met. Sue loved music, and served as cantor at the church where she worked. When she passed, I felt compelled to write a piece for her to celebrate the positive affect she had on my life and on the life of so many others who knew her. Because Sue was deeply religious, and worked for the church, I felt it was appropriate to set a sacred text to music. After talking to the Dowiak family, I learned that ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ was her favorite biblical passage. Through this composition I honor the memory of Sue and say thank you for all of the car rides, home cooked meals, kind words and compassion that you endlessly provided to me and my friends for many years. The piece was premiered in Griswold Hall at The Peabody Conservatory, and was conducted by Steven Crino.
