Six Autumns on the Hudson is a piece of historical fiction, written by Laurel Andersen.
The story depicts the friendship between Susie Barstow and Edith Wilkinson Cook, two very different painters of the Hudson River Valley school of painting. The two friends take a canoe trip through the Hudson River valley towards Bannerman Island every Autumn from 1858 to 1902. Each scene follows this seasonal trip during a different decade of their lives. Over the course of the opera, we see how these two women grow and change, confronting their personal motivations for making art, their own self identity, and how these realizations challenge their life-long friendship.
