Details

The piece is a walk through this garden. The composition is organized into five continuous movements that represent the main sections of the garden. Each room of the garden has its own presence and design, as it contrasts three unique symmetrical knot gardens with a sparse courtyard, and a vibrant wildflower garden. This interplay between symmetrical design, open space, and free-growing spaces, inspires the different movements of the piece. I hope that the work captures the lush, tranquil, and joyous nature of the garden; while also highlighting the design of each space.

I want to thank Network for New Music for commissioned this work, and for a wonderful collaboration.

In the Summer of 2025, I went to Edinburgh for the first time on vacation. While visiting the Royal Mile, located in the historic Old Town district, I got to explore the many closes, or narrow alleyways, scattered throughout the region. While many of these closes are historically preserved, or lead to private residences, Dunbar’s Close opens up into a large 17th century-style garden, revealing a quiet oasis amidst the bustling city streets.
